Spray-Pump Calibration: How to Apply the Correct Amount

The area covered by one spray tank depends on the pump, nozzle, pressure, walking speed, row spacing, and crop canopy. Guesswork can cause uneven application. Calibration means using clean water to measure how much spray volume the equipment delivers under real operating conditions.

Prepare the sprayer

  • Wear gloves and inspect the tank, hose, lance, and joints for leaks.
  • Clean filters and nozzles without enlarging the opening with wire or a sharp object.
  • Replace worn or mismatched nozzles.
  • Perform calibration with clean water, never pesticide.

A simple measured-area method

  1. Mark a representative area of known length and width.
  2. Fill the tank with a measured amount of clean water.
  3. Spray at the normal speed, pressure, and nozzle height.
  4. Measure the remaining water to find the volume used.
  5. Scale that volume to the total field area.

If output is too high or low, first check the nozzle, pressure, leaks, and walking speed. Excess pressure can create fine droplets that drift away, while a worn nozzle may discharge too much liquid.

Calculating product quantity

Calibration determines actual water volume; it does not change the product dose. Determine the product quantity from its label's area-based directions, then calculate tank mixtures using the calibrated area covered by each tank. Do not exceed the label rate.
